HOLIDAY TIPS

With the approaching holiday season there are a few items that all pet owners should keep in mind. First, most of us may treat ourselves to many enjoyable edibles but we should not share these foods with our pets. Cats and especially dogs are quite sensitive to fatty and spicy foods. These food stuffs, even in small amounts, can cause gastric upsets, intestinal disorders and pancreatitis. The last of these is very serious and can be deadly! If you must share, small amounts of turkey breast without the skin (this contains most of the fat) or any fixings (such as gravy) is probably your best choice. And when it comes to decorations, remember that cats are curious and explore with their mouths. We would recommend avoiding tinsel on your Christmas trees since many cats each year ingest the shiney holiday item, which can then cut through their intestines like a knife! Also, protect your Christmas tree against the cat climbing and thus tipping over the tree. You can either block access to the bottom branches and/or secure the tree from above. Lastly, do not leave holiday lights or candles lit and unattended. Curious puppies, kittens may chew cords, while adult cats and dogs (along with their younger cohorts) may knock over lit candles. Bottom line, use common sense but also protect yourself from the unexpected. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
