With summer winding down and autumn on the way, there are a few items we should know about to keep our pets safe and comfortable.
*First, remember that warm weather is still among us. So, it is imperative that we do not leave pets in our cars during warm weather! Your car can rapidly reach temperature far above 120F to 160F degrees! If your pet does gets a little overheated with a rectal temperature above 104F degrees, spray the pet with cool water and place them in front of a fan. But if they appear to be in distress, get them to a veterinarian ASAP!
*In areas with high pollen counts (eg. the northeastern US, make your pet more comfortable by removing allergens via a quick wipe of their faces and paws with a baby wipe each time they come in from outside.
*If traveling with your pet and they are susceptible to car sickness, ask your veterinarian for the new drug, maropitant (Cerenia).
*Never travel with your pet in your lap or the back of a truck.
*When traveling, call ahead for hotels or motels that accept pets and ask specifically for their restrictions.
*Keep your pets safe with veterinary approved flea and tick protection.
*Alway carry a water supply for your pet; keep them in the shade and minimize activity in the warm weather.
