Canine heartworm is caused by the parasite Dirofliaria immitis. The disease is spread by mosquitos and found in all 50 states. Any dog regardless of its age, sex or habitat is susceptible to heartworm infection. The highest infection rates are observed during warm weather, near stagnant water where mosquitos breed. But even homes in colder climates, such as the northeastern US, can harbor live mosquitos year round! If fact, a prominent Cornell parasitologist reported a live mosquito in ANTARTICA!!! That mosquito may not have harbored heartworm disease, but can you say the same for the mosquito that joins you for Christmas dinner?
